Ah, the ever-growing list of “don’t eat” foods during pregnancy… From raw dairy to organ meats, it seems like everything nutrient-dense comes with a warning label. But are these foods really as risky as we’re led to believe, or have we lost some old wisdom along the way? Today, we’re diving into two often-debated traditional foods: raw milk and organ meats. Although they may seem unconventional, they’re nutrient powerhouses that have been treasured by families for generations. Let’s explore the benefits, the risks, and ultimately, the choice that’s up to you.

Raw Milk: My Personal Experience

Let me start by sharing my own journey: I had raw dairy throughout each of my pregnancies without a single issue. I know that many of our clients have had similar positive experiences, choosing raw milk for its rich, whole nutrition and digestibility. Raw milk offers a unique profile of natural enzymes, beneficial bacteria, and fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and K2, which are often reduced or missing in pasteurized milk. These nutrients are foundational for immune health, bone strength, and healthy growth.

So, why all the caution around raw dairy, especially for expectant moms? Concerns about Listeria and other bacteria are what put raw dairy on the “no” list in conventional guidelines. Pasteurization aims to eliminate these bacteria, making milk safer for mass production, but it also removes some of the natural nutrients that raw milk provides. While it’s a personal choice, raw milk can be a nourishing option for those who feel comfortable with it and trust their source. As always, only you can decide what’s best for your family.

Organ Meats: Nature’s Multivitamin

Here’s where things get a little more controversial! Organ meats—liver, heart, kidneys—are nutrient powerhouses packed with vitamins and minerals that can be difficult to obtain elsewhere. For moms-to-be, these foods are especially valuable, as they deliver high levels of Vitamin A, B12, folate, iron, and zinc—nutrients essential for energy, immunity, and even fetal brain development. Many families have relied on these “superfoods” across cultures for generations.

That said, some may worry about the high Vitamin A content, especially in liver, during pregnancy. The key here is moderation. Adding small amounts into familiar meals (like mixing a little liver into meatballs or tacos) can provide a nutritional boost without overdoing it. Again, it’s all about what feels right for you and your loved ones.

Rediscovering Traditional Foods in Pregnancy

When it comes to food choices, sometimes the old ways had it right. Raw milk and organ meats were once everyday staples, cherished for their nourishing properties. Though they’ve been sidelined in modern diets, these foods remain among nature’s most potent nutrient sources. At CT Ranch, we’re here to provide options that honor these traditions, helping you bring real, whole foods to your table.

Final Thoughts: Empowering Your Choices

Our goal isn’t to set rules but to give you options. If you’re curious about incorporating raw milk or organ meats into your diet during pregnancy, we’re here to share what we know and offer support. At the end of the day, your journey is unique, and you know your body and your family best. We’re honored to be part of that journey with you.
